Sonic the Hedgehog

Post by KogeJoe » Thu Aug 19, 2004 8:31 pm

Who here has played the game "Sonic the Hedgehog?"

Well, just in case you didn't know, DCT's very own Masato Nakamura did the music for Sonic 1 and 2. I liked that music very much!

Anyone else in here like music from Sonic?

To those who know music theory a bit, the music in the first level in Sonic 1 (Green Hill Zone) has the exact same chords in "Marry Me?" from "Sing or Die."

Yes... I've mentioned this many times. Big fan of the Sonic music... it was my first exposure to Masato Nakamura's music.

It's also been mentioned that [stop typing as i search Jei's site for title] "Kusuriyubi no Kesshin" from Million kisses is Star Light Zone and "Sweet Sweet Sweet" from The Swinging Star was used for the final animation on Sonic 2 when you've blown up Robotnik's Death Egg and was looped on the Sonic 2 menus.

Incase you didn't know - Masa's music was used again in Sonic Advance for the GBA. He got quite a long credit for that!!
"Scrap Brain Zone"
"Star Light Zone"
"Power Up"
"Boss"
from Sonic the Hedgehog
"Emerald Hill Zone(2P)"

Hmmm..... you know, Sega couldn't afford to pay Masa for a 12 second theme for sonic 3.... why did they pay for all of those!? I rekon Masa wants international stardom by the looks of that credit.... even got the website. Probably offered a discount.

Also, the beta of Sonic Advance 3 had a horrid remix of Green Hill zone..... I hope Masa didn't do it or made them take it out. It's horrid.

Why keep using Masa's old music SEGA?? Get your cheque books out and hire Masa again!!! He's obviously the best composer or they wouldn't keep wanting to use his music.

Too bad I don't have any earlier albums... would like to listen to Kusuriyubi no Kesshin and Sweet Sweet Sweet...

Might I also mention that Scrap Brain Zone is forever immortalized in Japan by way of SEGA's widespread UFO machine? (AKA Crane Games)

Alright MASA!

Nice to meet another Sonic fan. I'm a HUGE fan of Sonic 1 & 2 songs, I even recorded the songs in a casette tape to listen to them a long time ago. :D I discovered DCT by listening to Sweet Sweet Sweet which is my all time favorite song now.

James, I didn't know about Sonic Advance. I gotta check it right now! By the way, which other games did Masa compose the songs for? I know only Sonic 1 & 2 so far.

By the way, have you guys heard the soundtrack from Knuckles Chaotix for 32X? It's a sequel from Sonic, I guess everyone knows that. The ending song is exactly like Sonic's which blends parts of all songs - I hope you guys know what I'm talking about. The songs are pretty great, which makes me wonder if Masa composed for this game as well. Or did someone just rip off his idea??? I never found info about it.

I can't get enough of the ending songs of both Sonic games. It's just amazing how they blend together so beautifully... I can't stop cursing SEGA because they didn't get Masa to compose for Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles and so on!

Priscila.

Hah hah hah!!!

That is so funny! You know, I too, a long time ago, took out my old SEGA Genesis you know? The one with the stereo headphones output jack? I hooked that up to a boombox and went to the Sound Test and I made a Sonic 1 and 2 soundtrack tape. I still have it!

For Sonic 1 you have to do a code to get the sound test...

Anyway, YEAH! Love Sonic music...

Even though I think it would have been a great idea to have Masa do the music for Sonic 3, I still liked the music in Sonic 3 and even made a tape of that too.

About Knuckles Chaotix, I don't know about Masa being involved in that... To be honest I never played it so... :P

On the side, I know where you got the name "Nakoruru." LOVED Samurai Spirits series for SNK arcade...

I own two Genesis actually, one is japanese the first model with the output jack the other one is brazilian the third model released here. I'm a SEGA freak, I still play Genesis because it is my favorite system. I also have a SegaCD, 32X and Saturn. I still didn't manage to get a Dreamcast though...

Sonic 3 never made it for me. I started to play it a few times but I keep going back to Sonic 2, because for me it's the best Sonic game. I'll try to finish Knuckles Chaotix soon to see the credits, I'm too curious about it.

You know, very few people know here I got my nickname from. :D I play Samurai Spirits on SegaCD a whole lot. I like fighting games.

I still dream that someday DCT will release some of Sonic's songs with lyrics, like Sweet Sweet Sweet. Can you imagine what it'd be like to hear Green Hill Zone's theme with Miwa's vocals? :o

Hey Nako,

Are you Brazilian by any chance? I would like to learn some Portuguese to go visit Brazil. Have you heard of Lisa Ono? She is Japanese, but she does Brazilian Samba style and I like that so much! Rumor has it that the largest Japanese community outside of Japan happens to be in Brazil. I dunno why, but it is so.

As for Sonic 3, you are not the first I have heard that didn't quite like it. Alot of people prefer Sonic 2... Oh well... C'est la vie...

Samurai Spirits came out for SegaCD? I wonder why I never found out about it. Maybe it was just a Brazilian thing... Well anyway, I play it at arcades whenever I can. Liked all of them up to part 4. I don't seem to have a favorite character though. All of them have such interesting story lines. I suppose you also like the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series? I play those too, but Samurai Spirits is my favorite series. I never really got into Capcom games. The last game I played was Super Street Fighter. As of now, I don't really play any games anymore... just listen to their music...

You know, you should give "Marry Me?" from Sing or Die a listen. It's in slow, swung 4/4 rhythm, but the chords are exactly the same as Green Hill Zone.

Wo!! There was just my reply last night!! Sparked some discussion.

Nope.... I dont think it was Masa, I'm about 99.9% sure it wasn't him, because I'd have that game now if he'd done the music! Sonic and Knuckles also had a medley of Sonic music at the end.... I guess they stole his idea. Howard Drossin did Sonic and Knuckles.
Too bad I don't have any earlier albums... would like to listen to Kusuriyubi no Kesshin and Sweet Sweet Sweet...
http://www.kingmasa.com/projects.html - theres a realplayer file of about 2 mins of it at my website.... you can download it in full from another site... I posted it somewhere on here.... forgot the link.

Masa was also credited as "Sound Produce" on the Master System Sonic THe Hedgehog 1. Although, they only use the end of act music, the main sonic theme music and the green hill music as Yuzo Koshiro wrote the rest of the score and arranged Masa's music.... theres an interesting arrangement by him of green hill zone on the end credits.

As for the Sonic Advance game... most of his music was only used on various menu's and not in the game.... BUT they do use his Sonic Theme as the invinsability theme and they use his Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 Boss music on the last level as they pay homage to the first bosses from Sonic 1 and 2.

Sonic Advance 3 contains a 3 or 4 remixes of Green Hill (I think they called the level "Sunset Hill" - different mix for each act), which are aweful and I didn't see a credit for Masa on the end credits

KogeJoe, I happen to be brazilian. Oh, I thought Lisa Ono was a nikkeijin. I heard some songs she sung in portuguese in the radio station from the japanese colony. Exactly, the biggest colony outside Japan is right here on Sao Paulo city. Their neighborhood happens to be my favorite part of the city, it's really nice. Lots of stores selling manga, CDs and everything else you might want. :)

Samurai Spirits came out for SegaCD in Japan under the name of "Samurai Shodown". There's Samurai Spirits also for Saturn as well. Sure, I played Fatal Fury and King of Fighters. My favorites besides SS are Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat actually. I still play the old consoles since I don't like 3D games.

It's kinda embarrasing but I didn't "hear" yet on 'Marry Me?' Green Hill Zone's chords. Embarassing because I used to play the flute, now I'm starting with a keyboard but gosh, the chords are giving me a hard time! So is sight reading... :?

Knuckles Chaotix soundtrack is so cool I thought it could be Masa. Aparently not, I was digging up a little on the web... there's no mention about him. I think Masa compositions fit so well on the game I thought he had seem the stages before composing. So I was checking out the Sonic 1 & 2 beta I was able to find on the web, all songs from Sonic 1 were there already - some not done yet, missing parts of the arrangement but only two stages were playable. Now Sonic 2 Beta was almost done, just Chemical Plant Zone wasn't there - there was a stage called Wood Zone instead using the song from Chemical Plant. And there was one song that was never used on the final version of Sonic 2.

I still didn't manage to check Sonic 1 for Master System. I own one but I didn't find a Sonic 1 cart yet! I also have a GBA but geez, the carts are so expensive these days.

Geez, I hope my reply didn't get WAY to messy! :P

SONIC 1 BETA???   Where, where, where!???
I didn't think anyone had found one. I have the Sonic 2 beta... interesting versions of Metropolis, Casino Night and Robotniks theme on that.

As for the green hill chords being the same... Marry Me uses Sevenths of the same chords during the first section - I'm not sure green hill uses sevenths.
Now Sonic 2 Beta was almost done, just Chemical Plant Zone wasn't there - there was a stage called Wood Zone instead using the song from Chemical Plant. And there was one song that was never used on the final version of Sonic 2.
You must have a different beta to me, Chemical Plant was done and Wood Zone used early Metropolis music. There are zones like "Death Egg" and "Genocide City" where Sonic just falls to his death. There are a few differently named zones aswell "Neo Green Hill" and "Dust Hill" (which is Mystic Cave although originally they had a desert level there).

The Music which was never used in Sonic 2 (10 in the sound test) was written for Hidden Palace zone, which was famously cut from the game because they ran out of time (and space probably). You can play some of it in the beta.

"There are a few differently named zones aswell "Neo Green Hill" and "Dust Hill" (which is Mystic Cave although originally they had a desert level there). "

A desert level? This explains why the music in Oil Ocean sounds pseudo Egyptian. Maybe that music was originally meant for the desert level. Although I like the music in Oil Ocean, it still doesn't seem to fit. The only thing that might fit is the constant sun in the backgound, but overall the music doesn't fit with the oil refineries and catwalks...

Just my opinion...

You may be right about that. I thought Oil Ocean music matched, but now you've said that.... you could be right.

WRT Sonic 1 Beta, I downloaded one matching that description and I believe its a Hack, not a real Beta. I dont think a Beta would freeze up an emulator like that did.... and if it did, it would be very early. The playable zones are identical to their final form.

James, happens that I have a writable cart for Genesis and I uploaded this Sonic 1 Beta to the cart. It runs on the real Genesis. I was able to do the code to get the sound test. It plays some songs missing some instruments and some with different samples so I believe it might be a real beta.

If you feel like I can dump the songs and upload them somewhere. It really does not run in emulators. It crashes like crazy on the real Genesis! Seems to be a very early beta or maybe a bad dump...
