DCT Article and Advert in SPEC Magazine

Post by Mercury » Sat Sep 26, 2009 3:00 pm

Back in the really early days of the Mega Drive in Japan, Sega had a newsletter called Sega Players Enjoy Club (SPEC). It was drawn and written by the developers themselves, and was pretty cool, but only lasted for several issues.

I came across some scans online, and in issue 7 there were some pretty cool bits about DCT. They're in Japanese, though, I don't know if anybody wants to take a crack at translating them.

There's an article that seems to be about some other artists as well as DCT's involvement with Sonic:

And there's an advert for their Wonder 3 tour, which charmingly calls them "Dream Cone True" :

I never knew about this newsletter. Did you come around more scanned issues? I remember my brother, at the time was studying Japanese and hoping to go work for Sega itself got a kick out of the fact programmers used nicknames. It was kind of an underground scene. He will get a kick out of these newsletters.

There is some pretty nice info here. I would like to get around to translate it if my job allows me. *sigh* I'm having Sunday night blues, don't mind me! :P

I found the scans at http://www.gazetadealgol.com.br. There are 3 issues in total so far. They are in low res in the books section, but there are links to hi res pdfs in the blog section of the site. There isn't anything else about DCT that I noticed, but there are a ton of cool Phantasy Star and a couple of Sonic adverts/articles, if you're interested.

It would be awesome if you could translate the DCT pages, even if it was just the basic gist of them. I love hearing about their early days, and especially anything in connection with Sonic.

I actually interviewed for a Genesis manual-writing position at Sega HQ in late 1993. Came pretty close to getting the job I guess, but I screwed up and said I didn't want to quit my private teaching gigs (BIG ooops). I've got a bit more respeck for Namco over Sega, but certainly Sega is good stuff.

At this time I only knew DCT from their goofy "Magic" billboards I saw in Shibuya:

Me: "WTH?"

Man, I was living in Tokyo during peak JPOP (late 90s) and I didn't go to a single concert. Just put a big L on my forehead.

Man those scans are really old-school with the vertical writing. Same print quality as my first Japanese textbook, also from ca 1990.

"DREAMS COME TRUE" are jumping into the "SEGA" mark.

The article discloses that PROJECT SONIC is a cartridge game coming out in the Spring (it actually came out in the summer of 1991), and about DCT's performance at a 1300-seat Bunka Kaikan (Culture Center) arena in Urayasu, next to Maihama. The story says that during the band intro, Miwa said "I am the [Number] 1 Woman Vocal", the everyone yells, "Yoshida Miwa", and Miwa says the Japanese equivalent of "dat's right!" ("dayo~n!").
