Hi everyone,
My name is Henry Hutcheson, and I'm (kind of) new to DCT. I've known about them for many years (Masato Nakamura is how I heard of them...he's also a composer for Sega, and I loved the music in the Sonic games), but I just now am starting to buy their music (about time!).
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here knew of any artists similar to DCT. I love DCT's older music (I really LOVE the disco-ish/soft soul sound on The Swinging Star), and I'd love to find artists that make music like that (like the music DCT used to make). I also like Pizzicato Five and Fantastic Plastic Machine, who also sound similar to DCT.
If anyone could post any similar artists here, I'd really appreciate.

Your question about similar artists left me with my own questions about that. Nothing immediately came to mind....
The group blends the genres so well, that no one really comes close...
One of the things I first heard about DCT was that they were the Japanese Parliament/Funkadelic. Now, while they've certainly been funky on some tracks, the whole J-PFunk label makes me think of Masa coming out on stage dressed like Bootsy Collins...^^
I must not forget to mention the DCT side group: Funk The Peanuts. It's Miwa and Rin (The main DCT backing vocalist) for the most part with a funky/disco-ish style which is a lot of fun and probably right up your alley. Later on they added the other backing vocalist, Robin to forum Funk The Peanuts: R and the sound remained funky, but sounded more like today's music. Definitely recommended.

For excellent vocals, I'd highly recommend Misia. The best vocalist of the newer set in Japan right now with some excellent R&B productions backing her up. She's even a fan of DCT herself...they did a fantastic duet together called "I miss you" that you should check out.

Another excellent (and very underappeciate) vocalist is Fayray. She's a sturdy balladier (sp?) with a bit of smoke on her voice. Even speaks English quite well, so she could always make a break for the states.

There's certainly *many* two guy-one girl groups that have been influenced by DCT. There's even numerous ones who use the same 'three initials or three english names' idea. Some of those influenced:
-Do As Infinity
-Every Little Thing
-Day After Tomorrow
-SAL (DCT's own prodigy)
-Ichii Sayaka with Cubic Cross
-The Brilliant Green (ok..I might be pushing it here...)
The most similar of those would be Do As Infinity. While they have excellent production values and roll around the genres, their vocalist is only so-so. They're no DCT, but I did buy their first two albums, so they're better than average.
(Note: They're now One Guy-One Gal....just like DCT)

However, the first person that really came to mind is the Polish Jazz-Pop singer Basia. She's a supreme vocalist who had decent success breaking into the English jazz market in the late 80s/early 90s. Her songs kept getting better as her English got better....her album "Londer, Warsaw, New York" is a fabulous piece of work. If you like any of Miwa's Jazz-ish stylings, you'd probably dig Basia too. Miwa and Basia actually have a number similaries....(We made a list...wish I could find it...^^)

Satoko Ishimine
To me, the j-pop vocalist Satoko Ishimine has a voice much like Miwa's -- alto T with a large range and strength. I have her 1996 CD "Passion." There is little passion in the songs, though I like it anyway.

Bird. funky name, but sings kind of like Miwa in "Sing-or-Die" mode, a little.
I've only heard a couple of her tracks from her 1999 days, though.
