What are you listening to now? (JPopWise)

Post by Jei » Sat Sep 28, 2002 11:14 am

So, what's in your CD Player/MP3 Player lately?

* Cornelius: 'Point' (Album)

It's still odd to find JPop in the stores here in the states and buying this album at my local 'BestBuy' (Giant Music/Video/Electronics chain) felt even odder. But the music transcends all that...

Cornelius is a fantastic musical experimentalist...it's always pleasing to experience people working outside of the box. Mix some acousitc guitar, some rock, some R&B, some funk, a little Frank Zappa, some water...:)
Makes for a very satisfying (if you can get into it) album...

'Drop' is the best song from the album. (The water reference...)

* Fayray: 'Over' (Single)

Another strong, sultry singer (with perfect English) who definitely seems to be underappreciated by the general public. Mostly Rock/Pop stylings...she reminds me of a certain 70s singer whose name I can't pull from the back of my mind... ^^;

* Rag Fair: 'Love Love na Couple Furi Furi de Chuu' (and others) (Singles)

Did quite a double take to see this acapella/Bobby McFerrin style group beginning to make it on the charts, especially since they don't keep to one style of music. 'Love Love..' is a great energetic doo-wop style song, while 'Koi no Mileage' is a Beach Boy-style surfing song.
No instruments in sight, but they still sound better most plugged groups...:)

* Skoop On Somebody: 'a tomorrowsong' (Single)

A very catchy R&B joint with a decent male singer who sounds like he might have more vocal strength under what he's presented. Definitely looking forward to what they have to say in the future...

Beauty and Harmony by Miwa Yoshida

Post by zberry » Tue Oct 22, 2002 1:01 pm

Very good stuff! I urge DCT fans to order it if they haven't heard it. Smooth, mello, jazzy, but a great way to start the day.
Any idea when another solo Miwa record might come out?
She's such a great jazz vocalist, it would be nice to hear more like this.

Bonnie Pink

Post by bokusi » Fri Feb 21, 2003 10:15 am

:D I listen to a little Bonnie Pink daily. Bonnie's songs are about half english, half Japanese, often within a single song. She writes the music, lyrics and plays guitar, and I always appreciate j-pop who go beyond a produced voice. Her music is inventive, the lyrics both sly and fun, and her band has funk. I heard once that she lived and performed in Boston for awhile.

The only jpop I have with me now are the mp3's I brought back with me in 2000. (TSUTAYA, one of the better video rental places also rents CD's for ¥500/week -- I took out the entire DCT catalog for a spin one week).

Anyway, my iTunes library has some:

hitomi (wish, kimi-no-tonari)

'wish' has some of the FIXX's "Deeper and Deeper" mechanical sound to it, rather awesome song, in fact. Can't understand a phrase in it, but that's makes it even a better song to listen to.

THE YELLOW MONKEY (kyuukon)

poetic porn rock. 'karada-de karada-wo tsuyoku musubimashita' ahem.

chara (time machine, swallowtail butterfly, are-ha-ne)

chara is an interesting artist who transformed her look to match her music.
her early look was a pudgy nasalist who writes and arranges well but can't sing, but now she's not so cloyingly annoying.

Sentimental Bus (SunnyDaySunday)

high-tempo playful track about a girlfriend taking her beau to a day game on a hot summer sunday. minor hit in 1999 from a one-hit wonder band (something of a rarity in Japan).

the brilliant green (sono speed-de, tsumetai hana-wo)

two great guitar rock songs, kinda Berlin-y singer, but slower. sono speed-de is prototypical j-rock.

UA, Cocco, Misia, Bonnie Pink, Shiina Ringo had some good songs but at the time I didn't feel they were worth burning a CD for, alas.

What I really wish I had now was, um, "Love Machine" by Morning Musume. Great exercise song for the gym.

I discovered a singer called "Anri" in her album called "Half +Half" which I keep coming back to. I thought she was obscure but then saw on her web site that she has two dozen albums out there. I'm always especially fond of J-popstars who write their own songs. The music is flip with catchy hooks, and fine. This one I have, her 19th, even includes a cut written by, and sung with, funk queen Maxayne Lewis.

:shock:

better living through chemistry - Pearl

Post by bokusi » Tue Jul 29, 2003 9:19 am

Good rocking chemicals in the group "Pearl" which is actually the pop songstress Naomi Tamura and her guitarist Kenji Kitajima, along with Tony Franklin (bass) and the American drummer Carmine Appice.

Appice was part of the '60's Top of the Pop group "Vanilla Fudge" which specialized in taking pop standards (motown, beatles) and blowing them up. If you want to hear really good thrombing rock, you can find a 2003 Vanilla Fudge rendition of "Star Spangled Banner" at
http://www.carmineappice.net

Sometimes I think DCT could use some of this power and funk

Recently I've been super obessed with Namie Amuro. So the newest thing on my computer is Suit Chic-When Pop Hits The Fan. It's a hip hop album featuring Amuro. Some of the rap parts are anoyning though. ^^'

Don't usually believe in resurrecting old threads, but since I had to compile some best of 2005 lists I thought I'd share :) Besides, threads like these are good ways of finding new good bands.

These are some of the albums of 2005 that I liked:

Kiroro - Wonderful days
Rimi Natsukawa - Ayakaji no ne
Chirinuruwowaka - Iroha
Asuca Hayashi - Chou

I guess the only name that isn't well known is Chirinuruwowaka. It's a band led by Yuu from Go!Go!7188 and play a lot like her solo stuff.

Apart from those, I find myself listening to HY a lot. They are a J-rock-hop band with Okinawan roots influences. Official website: http://www.hymode.net/

And finally, what am I listening to at this moment? Hajime Chitose - Sweet Jane.
